Cooking for house guest is no joke 07/29/2011
We had been complaining about no one coming out to visit us since we moved across country a year ago. Well guess what? No more complaints from me anytime soon. My aunt and her family just left and I had a major a-ha moment half way through the visit. No one ever offers to cook because my cooking has become the standard and folks just enjoy what I'm serving up these days. I started them off with an amazing shrimp scampi on the first night, then there was an amazing pot of gumbo with all the goodies that you can put in the pot, not to mention I made a delicious and healthy breakfast cake that they nibbled on the entire week they were here. Well, not the whole week, but you get my point. We had a few breaks in there with pizza from Costco, no, not quite the pizza pie from the local Italian restaurant, but it works when you're feeding more than 4 hungry people. We also had one of our favorites, CheeseCake Factory where the food is pretty much worth the wait because the serving sizes are perfect and there is such a variety of items on the menu. Anyhow, my family has come and gone and while we pretty much did everything under the sun - San Diego zoo, Lego Land, movies, bowling, and shopping, I can truly say that I'm tired, but they without fail let Add Comment Yes - bu! 06/30/2011
Hello there. It's been a while since I've signed on and shared my thoughts about the latest findings. We're just 2.5 months shy of celebrating a year in sunny San Diego, and boy has it been fun. The new friends, the fun places to go, the food, are to name a few of things that have made this transition really worth while for us. Of course, there's nothing easy about moving 2000 plus miles across country, but as some may say - you have to take the good with the bad. Fast forward ahead, I must tell you that my cooking demonstrations are becoming more popular, so much so I am debating now about how much I want to invest in that business and actually make it a part-time gig to profit from. Okay, so the real reason I'm on here tonight is to talk about our experience at Nobu. Yes, hubby finally figured it - the very next opportunity to eat out at a great place, the only one that I had on my list was NOBU. Nobu is an amazing Japanese fusion restaurant that features more fresh fish than the ocean itself...LOL! I mean we had scallop ceviche, shrimp and tuna ceviche seasoned with just the right amount of lemon juice, cilantro and white wine vinegar - I mean melt in mouth fish that left you wanting more. If that wasn't enough we had their lobster and brussels sprouts entree that was prepared perfectly and cut right down the middle for easy access to all the good stuff. Did I mention that we went with some great people that I had been wanting to meet for quite some time, although I understand that their days here in the country are pretty much numbered - per their desires to return to their home country of India. Either way, I can only hope that we will see Haresh and Kinishka one more time before they go, but if not, our time with them at Nobu was certainly a night to remember. I think my mantra will be, good friends and good food combined makes for an absolutely fantastic experience. Until next time, one bit of advice: if you go to Nobu make sure you got plenty of room on your VISA and make sure you're with someone that's worth the trip....it's no inexpensive It's been awhile since I've logged in and blogged about the latest happenings in my life. So much has transpired, so many miles added to the body and mind, so many tasks accomplished, so many prayers answered. I guess in the spirit of what I consider my food blog, I must add that I've gone to so many restaurants. The latest one that I totally can't wait to go back to is "SMASHBURGERS", one of the popular yet low-key burger joints around town. Went there on Wednesday after a trip to Fashion Valley with my foodie friend Dee Dee and we hurt ourselves enjoying probably one of the best burgers I've ever had. I can honestly go on and on about great restaurants or perhaps I should say really good places to eat. I gotta jump off now, we have our third "Dining Out, but In with Girlfriends" event tomorrow at 11 am! We are demonstrating for a group of women who are recognizing the Go Red Heart Healthy Awareness campaign for the month of February. Back to the beach, for good eats.... 11/20/2010
So today was a really special day, first of all it was Friday (TGIF!), second, it was my oldest sons last day of school before the Thanksgiving holiday. On that note, some girl-friends who happen to have boys that goes to Win's school planned to go for lunch together with our boys when school was out. Keep in mind two of the moms have gone to this restaurant before, but some kind of way I ended up the designated driver for the six of us and I've never gone - so the adventure begins. Our restaurant of choice today (I love this place..so many good spots to eat) was Poseidon of Del Mar, which is a well known award-winning seafood restaurant that sits oceanside. And even on a cloudy day the ocean and it's waves as a back-drop creates an ambiance that leaves you speechless, regardless. We arrive at the restaurant with our 8 year old sons in tow and while we got settled into are table for six, it didn't take Bridgett long to decide on the appetizer. She ordered the seafood platter for the whole table....now don't you just love it when there are take charege folks with you (especially when it comes to ordering food) that waste no time on making decisions. The platter was served with cocunut shrimp, fried scallops, which the breading was too heavy, a few strips of calamari (over-fried for my taste), and a crab cakt that kept getting turned down by everyone at the table. Our semi-vegetarian, healthier eating foodie-friend Alonda decided on the grilled vegetable quesadilla finished her lunch without any complaints, so I'm going to assume that it was a winner. All in all the food was pretty good- I had the crab cakes over a salad and Bridgett polished off a few cocunut shrimp and a bowl of clam chowder, we all drank our flavored tea with smiles and all in all had a good time. The boys found their way to the back deck of the restaurant where they sat on the wall to get enjoy the ocean view and to take in a few more minutes of good times with good friends at Poseidon. Sushi restaurant with a twist 11/14/2010
So it's Friday night and we've all had an extremely busy day and we're looking at one another, wondering "what's for dinner"? We decided to go to one of our fave lunch spots that serves really fresh and good sushi. It's a restaurant less than 5 miles from where we live called 'The Loveboat'...yep, that's right, 'Loveboat'. We pull up and the valet guy tells us while it was very busy, we may still be able to get seated pretty quickly. Oh, and he mentioned there was a dj. DJ, I knew it- I told Scott the last time we were there and they were playing good music during the busy lunch hour that they probably got pretty 'crunk' in the evenings or for special occasions. Crunk means a really turned up situration so in this case a loud music, a strobe light, and sushi chef's that entertain the crowd. I won't drag this out, but anytime you looking for a cool spot to drop in for good sushi, AND a fun atmosphere, check out one of our faves, 'The Loveboat'. What tops it off is that one of the singing chefs, not the one who does the saki bombs, but the guy on the end, wears a sombrero and sings and dances to al the latest pop songs. How's that for fun times?!? Some good eats in La Jolla! 10/19/2010
So thanks to our friends Chonnette and Darren we had a wonderful time on our first double date together. If you're ever looking for a real chill spot in LaJolla that has a nice bar scene, good background music and to top it all off, really good food - then you should check out a place called Cafe Japengo (www.cafejapengo.com) We started off with good cocktails - I had a very flavorful and fruity raspberry martini that wasn't too sweet and the fresh raspberries bits floated in the glass like lillies on a pond. I was told that this is one of their more popular drinks and I can understand why. The hubby's ordered several good sushi rolls and sashimi--you know how guys can get sometimes, they like to flex their muscles when it comes to most everything--and ordering raw fish is not excluded:~). Our meals consisted of their famous grouper dish that was cooked in a great tasting broth and served with lobster dumplings--oh so divine, with lots of other discreet herbs that made it just right. I ordered the scallop dish that came with super large diver scallops cooked to a carmalized perfection on top of a potato cake with a sauce that is too complex to dissect all of it's make up. All in all, we had a wonderful time there--we laughed and talked to the point that the waiter didn't return--I guess he figured he'd fulfilled his tasks of serving up good meals, good service, in an atmosphere that exuded a grown and sexy ambiance and grown that would make any one want to come back. So we're officially San Diegoians now that we've been here paying taxes for about a month. The sun is amazing, the weather is perfect, and the people have been extremely nice. We moved from our beautiful home and are living in corporate, temporary housing in an area called 4S Ranch and to say it's super busy is an understatement. It's a busyness that's good for new comers because everything is so within reach and the opportunity to meet people is unlimited. There's a handful of restaurants, two grocery stores that never sleeps and lots of residences that utilize every aspect of life here. All that said, I've found some neat little restaurants in the Rancho Bernardo area--within my short stay I've already experienced good and bad sushi, good and not so good Mexican, good Vietnamese with my new neighbor Minh, and a host of other places that I will have to add to the site. Finally, we've reconnected with some friends that we met over 13 years ago in Ohio, which they live in Carlsbad--a coastal community just up the highway. Fast forward ahead, I met with Chonette and her friend Teresa for lunch today at Panera Bread. The company was great, but I'm never excited about the food at places like tha-my lunch preference is good sushi or a new restaurant that I've never tried. Oh, also, a double cheeseburger from In and Out burger is also a great Plan B if all esle fails. Most of all I am thrilled to be meeting new people and it sounds like I have a lot to look forward to with Chonnette and her girlfriends that get together on a regular basis. Nothings like good girlfriends, good food, and good times--wouldn't your agree. Restaurant IRIS, with no reservations! 06/18/2010
After a long week of my husband working in Minneapolis as a new Manager for a top rated company, you can imagine that I was dog-tired from functioning as a single mom caring for my boys. But to the make the week all better, my Mom offered to take the boys for the evening in order for Scott and I to spend some quality time together--doing absolutely whatever what wanted to do. Well if you know anyting about us, and if you hadn't learned thus far from reading my blog, we absolutely love to indulge on a great meal! I was picking my husband up from the airport, kidless and we were going to decide where to go without giving it alot of thought. I decided to wear my cute pink deep V-neck summer dress and even made up my face so that when I picked him up from the airport he would be so dazzled that he would feel obliged to take my anywhere I so chose. Did I mention that he greeted me with a cute, small bag with a fancy foil label on it, which folks--screams a good delectable something to nibble on (I'll tell you more about that later). So the date was ON! After our hello kisses and how are you's we decided that we were both in need of a great meal--and Scott being Scott, decides--although Restaurant IRIS is always packed out and hard to get into without a reservation let's just go by there to see if we could get a table. And that's just what we did! If you've never been to Restaurant IRIS, it's this cute and charming little house in Midown Memphis that's reaks romance and elegance--my kind of place:). We were seated outside at a table for two and the rest was a great night that included glasses of bubbly for me, a few mojitos and wine for him and several pretty good food choices as the day slowly turned into night--the candle ambience set the mood for a truly sweet end to dinner. Overall Restaurant Rating: Restaurant IRIS - 08 Good times with Girl-friends at Cafe 1912 05/31/2010
So my good friend Omoju has decided to return to school to pursue a another degree, but not just any ole' degree, a PhD in Engineering at Berkley of California. Of course getting accepted into the program is no small feat, not to mention relocating to Cali to do so is what prompted us to celebrate. So myself along with my good friend Lee, and another good sista Natalie decided that we'd treat her to a wonderful brunch at one of her favorite spots--Cafe 1912. This is a quaint little French restaurant in the heart of Midtown Memphis that has the most unassuming exterior making it very easy to pass without ever knowing that it's there. Me being me, I had to check out the menu before I got there because brunch isn't necessarily my favorite meal, but I know with my indecisiveness sometimes I can be the one that hold up the ordering process when it comes to eating out. Come time to order I was reminded of why I appreciate eating out with Omoju so much and it clearly has everything to do with the fact that the girl knows what she likes! She orders a cup of java with a shot of Remy Martin for starters. She is never ashamed of doing what I consider the grown and sexy thing to do without any hangup and inhibition. So while the menu had some great options I decided that I was going for either the seafood crepes or the crabmeat benedicts. In announcing what I was going to order to the table my girl-friend Lee who is notorious for wanting to sample several menu items, much like myself, without any hesitation asked if we could share those exact two dishies because she was thinking the same thing. And that's just what we did. I had the fresh and flavorful sangria as my beverage of choice and of course I shared the crab benedict and seafood crepes with Lee. I honestly can't remember what Omoju and Natalie ordered, but I do know that Omoju also ordered the cheesecake for dessert--once again, not thinking twice about it, she does what she wants to and I love it! The food was excellent at Cafe 1912 and I can't wait to go back to try something on their dinner menu. We of course shut the place down because as confident and talkative women we all have so much to share and we don't hold back because we just don't have to. The next time you're looking for a good brunch spot on Sunday, give'em a try--I promise you won't be disappointed. Overall Restaurant Rating: Cafe 1912 - 09 Sharing can be a good thing.... 02/20/2010
Don't you just love it when you have a friend that you dine with and enjoy sharing the meal as much as you do? Now, I'm not talking about sharing a meal to save a dime, but what I do mean is strategically selecting two entrees that will suit you both--that way you get to sample two different items on the menu in one trip. All that said, my friend Lee and I met at this quaint little spot in Midtown Memphis called Cafe Eclectic. It's a cute little breakfast/lunch joint that serves homemade breads, donuts, crossaints, and other baked goods, and a host of other things cooked with natural ingredients that are not processed with chemicals and preservatives. Cafe Eclectic, much like it's decribed on the website it's an informal little, eclectic, european, old-fashioned diner right smack-dab in the middle of a community/neighborhood that's very welcoming and warm to anyone who stops in. Lee and I caught up for the first 20 minutes after getting settled in, finally deciding on two meals that we would both love to try. We shared the BLT&A with grilled chicken, which was a little messy for me, but the avocado and bacon always pairs welll together. We also shared, get this--a PATTY MELT. No who in the halibut orders a patty melt this close to bathing suit, or shall I say Spring Break? Well that's what I like about my friend Lee, she's so cool and she much like me loves to eat, so we didn't hesitate to indulge. After about an hour or so there, we decided to end our lunch date, but of course not before grabbing about $10 worth of yummy looking desserts from the dessert counter on the way out. If I don't recommend anything else, you must try to the Charlie Brown bar and the chocolate chip cookies, if you ever get a chance to stop by there. Oh, Lee says the blueberry donut was a huge treat as well--she finished it before we could pull off the parking lot! |
